According to authorities, when a 14-year-old Mississippi girl urgently texted her friend to come over to help with an “emergency” one afternoon in March, the friend had no idea what she would see next.

“Are you squeamish around dead bodies?” Carly Gregg, 14, reportedly questioned her friend when she opened the home door, according to Mississippi state prosecutor Kathryn White Newman, who spoke during the now-15-year-old’s murder trial, as seen on CourtTV. Local WAPT and WJTV also covered Newman’s opening comments in the trial, which began on Monday.

According to Newman, Gregg brought her companion to her bedroom, where her mother lay dead on the floor from three gunshots, as reported by CourtTV and WAPT. According to WLBT, Newman stated in court that Gregg’s mother was searching her daughter’s bedroom for vape pens.

The Clarion Ledger, WLBT, and WJTV have charged Gregg with murder and attempted murder. Prosecutors claim the little girl used her mother’s gun to shoot her dead inside the family’s Brandon, Miss., home before contacting a friend.

Prosecutors later accuse the youngster of setting up an apparent ambush to shoot and murder her stepfather, Heath Smylie, when he returned home, according to WLBT, WJTV, and The Clarion Ledger.

According to Court TV’s video of the courtroom, Newman presented the prosecution’s case to jurors on Monday. Newman said the youngster came home with her mother, a math teacher at Northwest Rankin High School, where Gregg was a student. According to Newman, Gregg walked directly into her parents’ bedroom to take a.357 Magnum revolver from beneath their mattress. Gregg proceeded into her own bedroom, hiding the gun behind her back, and approached her mother, fatally shooting her three times, according to The Clarion Ledger, WLBT, and WJTV.

Zachary Cotton, the Rankin County investigator, stated during a preliminary hearing in April, videotaped and uploaded by the site Jackson Jambalaya, that home security footage shows Gregg’s alleged careless demeanor before and after the shooting.

One video, according to Cotton, shows the adolescent returning to the kitchen after allegedly murdering her mother, followed by the suspect texting from a phone. According to Cotton, the inquiry revealed that the kid was contacting her stepfather to inquire when he would be home.

After murdering her mother and attempting to shoot her stepfather, Cotton testified in court that another video showed Gregg “singing to her dog” and then texting a friend to come to the house.

When her stepfather returned home, prosecutors say Gregg attempted to shoot him before fleeing via the family’s backyard following a battle over the pistol, according to WJTV, WLBT, and CourtTV.

WAPT, WLBT, and WJTV asserted that they apprehended her near the residence shortly after her escape.

Gregg faces two life terms if convicted of murder and attempted murder, according to The Clarion Ledger, WAPT, and CourtTV. According to the publications, the adolescent turned down the state’s plea bargain of 40 years in jail, and her defense team submitted a plea of insanity.
