Hogestyn, who was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, once dreamed of becoming a professional baseball player. He even signed with the New York Yankees and played for one of their minor clubs before suffering an injury in 1977.
Hogestyn’s first major break came in the early 1980s, with the CBS series Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. He first appeared on Days of Our Lives in 1986 as the mystery figure “The Pawn” before becoming a fan favorite as John Black.
John became one of numerous cherished pairs throughout the years, but none has been more popular than his relationship with Marlena Evans, played by Deidre Hall. They earned the Soap Opera Digest Award for Favorite Couple in 2005.
However, Hogestyn’s recognition extended beyond his enduring role. He and his childhood sweetheart, Victoria Post, married in 1986 and stayed together for 37 years. They have four children: girls Whitney, Alexandra, and Rachael, as well as a boy named Ben and seven grandkids.
The actor’s DOOL co-stars quickly took to social media to express their recollections.
