The May 2022 shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, hit very close to home for 54-year-old actor Matthew McConaughey, a native of the community.
Following the killing of 19 children and two teachers at Robb Elementary School by an 18-year-old former student, McConaughey attended a White House briefing and pleaded with Americans to “renegotiate our wants from our needs.”
“We need responsible ownership, and we need background checks.” We need to raise the minimum age to acquire an AR-15 weapon to 21. We require a waiting period for such firearms. “We need red flag laws and consequences for those who violate them; these are reasonable, practical, and tactical regulations,” he stated.
The Oscar-winning actor continues, “Some deranged individuals are abusing and hijacking the Second Amendment.”
McConaughey and his wife, Camila Alves, have since founded the Greenlights Grant Initiative, which, according to their website, “creates safer school environments and ensures the well-being of our children.”
Not ‘alright, alright, alright’.
In the fall of 2023, McConaughey appeared on The View to promote his children’s book “Just Because.”
The Texas native answered panelists’ questions while also offering co-host Joy Behar a foot massage. He discussed the book with his three children.
Sunny Hostin then flipped the script, praising McConaughey for being “so outspoken against violence, particularly gun violence.”
“In 2021, you pondered running for governor of Texas but decided to prioritize your family. Do you believe the political office is in your future? Hostin questioned the guy, who had pondered running for governor in his native state two years before.
Ghosts of Girlfriends Past celebrities responded, “If that’s where I’d consider myself most beneficial, then yes.” Right now, I want to be the most valuable father.
Later, Behar returned to the issue and appeared to strike a chord with the Dallas Buyers Club actor. In the now viral video, the debate became heated.
Behar continued the topic of politics and firearms by asking, “Do you think you could get elected in Texas if you’re anti-gun?”.
McConaughey reiterated her question before responding, saying, “One thing about me and politics, to give you a direct statement right there, is that I am playing a game.” Still maintaining his gentlemanly demeanor, McConaughey waved his finger at her and continued, “I’m not interested in playing.”
“Ok, don’t do it,” Behar said.
After the break, Hostin attempted to reconcile: “I did want to say that I’ve done a lot of research in terms of your advocacy, and I don’t know that you’re anti-gun; I think you’re pro-gun responsibility and legislation.”
