Boyle was born in Blackburn, West Lothian, on April 1, 1961. Her father, Patrick Boyle, was a miner and WWII soldier who also played at Bishop Blaize. His wife, Bridget, was a shorthand typist. Susan was the couple’s ninth and last child. Boyle may have blended well with her many siblings, but she did not succeed well in the outside world.
The singer candidly revealed in a 2013 interview that her friends bullied her because she was “different.” Susan has battled with emotional outbursts, social interaction, and communication all her life, which has frequently limited her ability to connect and behave appropriately. To make herself feel better, all she could do was sing.
Susan commented, ” Boyle answered, “I come from a musical family.” It has always existed, even for my father. I’ve always played music, including singing. It has been in my blood since I was twelve years old when I began participating in school plays and shows.
Boyle went on to describe how a later-in-life health visit helped her understand some of her current issues. Boyle received an Asperger’s diagnosis while she was in her forties.
Susan had visited the doctor to discuss her uneasiness, which she saw as an indication that something was wrong with her. The singer said, “I went to get a diagnosis from a Scottish specialist.” “No one told me to.” Since I was unable to work, I assumed I was suffering from a more serious ailment. Her doctor made her do a series of tests, and the results indicated that her “IQ was above average.” Susan said she was grateful for the diagnosis, but it won’t define her.
She added that the diagnosis will not affect her life. It’s just a disease I have to live with, she explained, adding that she hoped it would make people more understanding and empathetic.
Regardless of all her previous challenges, Boyle excelled at singing “O Holy Night.”
