Hořín, originally a baroque château, was erected at the end of the 17th century on the request of Earl Jacob of Czernin and is now a rococo-style château. Then, they constructed some farming buildings next to the château, which closed the courtyard and formed an artistically cohesive piece of architecture. The Lobkowicz family acquired Hořín in the late 18th century and has owned it ever since. A 10-hectare park surrounds the château. The deal also includes a 1.4-hectare farm. Château Hořín is located in the village of the same name, near the confluence of the rivers Vltava and Elbe, 2 km from Mělník, and around 40 kilometers from Prague.
CHATEAU DESCRIPTION:
Earl Heman Jacob Czernin commissioned Giovanni Battista Alliprandi to construct a baroque hunting château in 1969. F.M. Schiffern and his brother Anton embellished it with paintings. Earl Czernin found the château modest and renovated it into a baroque château between 1713 and 1720, following F.M. Kaňka’s proposal. Subsequently, the château underwent multiple renovations and expansions. The builders constructed two pavilions and connected them to the château through diagonal passageways. The goal was to use one of the pavilions as guest lodging and convert the other into a château chapel. Eventually, they constructed several farm structures to serve as stables. Since then, this arrangement has remained intact. It represents an important and artistically cohesive piece of architecture.
Notable are the rococo interior furnishings, particularly the so-called “Stone rooms” from 1760–1763, which have largely survived on the ground floor of the chêtau.
CHATEAU DISPOSITION AND LOCALITY
The center building has three stories above and one below ground. The total usable area measures 10,000 square meters. A restaurant, private rooms, and lodging can occupy the 2,300 square meter ground level. Church services and concerts can take place in the majestic and well-preserved château chapel of St. John of Nepomuk. On the first level, 2,200 square meters are available for reconstruction into hotels and individual rooms. The second story spans 1,200 square meters, allowing for the construction of magnificent rooms or suites. The area on the third-highest level with the most spectacular view is 750 square meters. The spacious basement is particularly worth noticing, with 1,700 square meters available for wellness building or wine cellar renovation.
The château is located near the junction of the rivers Vltava and Elbe, about 2 km from Mělník in central Bohemia. Nearby lies the Kokořínsko nature preserve. The château offers a unique perspective of the château in Mělník, owned by the Lobkowicz family, as well as the peak Říp. The nearest airport, Václav Havel in Prague, is 40 km away.
POSSIBLE USE
Because of its convenient position near Prague, the château encourages the development of a large hotel with a fine restaurant that would combine late baroque and early rococo characteristics and entice tourists with its historical charm. The transformation of the huge cellars into a unique health oasis is possible. You can use the orangery areas in the enormous château park, and convert other structures into stables with a riding hall. There is ample parking space. There are plans to rebuild a premium hotel. If you’re interested, we can display it. Another option is to convert the châtau into a magnificent senior living facility or an Alzheimer’s center.
