When we think about animal rescue, we frequently see adorable puppies and kittens.
However, remember that our equine companions also need a caring home, particularly as they age and become “too old to work.”
Enter Big John, a magnificent workhorse that had seen better days.
Fortunately, the generous people at “Colby’s Crew Rescue” in Albemarle County, Virginia, stepped in to offer him a fresh lease on life.
Big John’s new best friend is Cotton, a little donkey who lives on the farm with him.
Big John’s post-rescue lifestyle is nothing short of fantastic.
People claim that he receives unimaginable pampering, including two beers a day, veterinary orders, and his own massager.
Add that to the wide pastures to gallop over, infinite hay, and a community of other animals, and you’ve got a horse enjoying the good life. However, something appeared to be missing.
Big John had lots of horse friends nearby, but he appeared more interested in spending time with Cotton.
The rescue crew felt his loneliness and set out to find him a special someone to grow old with.
Despite meeting numerous possible partners, Big John remained uninterested—until Stardust entered the picture.
Stardust, another senior rescue horse, quickly piqued the team’s interest.
They had a feeling she would be the ideal match for Big John. And wow, they were correct!
“From the first minute he saw her, Big John was enamored,” according to the crew.
Big John couldn’t contain his enthusiasm and raced up to greet Stardust as soon as he spotted her. The staff carefully separated them for a few days to guarantee compatibility.
When they eventually met, Big John was ecstatic.
After a few months, it feels like Big John and Stardust have known one another forever.
They share meals, a paddock, and some adorable cuddles.
One of Big John’s favorite hobbies is to put his head on Stardust’s back. While he still likes playing with Cotton, he returns to Stardust at the end of the day.
The rescue crew likens them to an elderly married couple, believing they were meant to be together.
“Though they may have only found each other later in life, the two are surely grateful to the people who rescued them and brought them together,” according to the researchers.
Now they may spend their golden years surrounded by love and care.
