Juan Izquierdo, a Uruguayan soccer player, died days after fainting on the pitch during a game. He was 27.
Izquierdo died at a Brazilian hospital on Tuesday, Aug. 27, five days after collapsing during a Copa Libertadores game in São Paulo, according to The Associated Press.
According to a statement from Hospital Albert Einstein, Izquierdo died at 9:38 p.m. local time from “cardiorespiratory arrest associated with his cardiac arrhythmia,” according to the connected press.
The Associated Press reported on Monday, Aug. 26, that the hospital’s physicians placed Izquierdo, who was on a ventilator before his death, in neurological critical care due to rising intracranial pressure.
In a post on X (previously known as Twitter), the Uruguayan soccer team remembered Izquierdo.
“With immense sadness and astonishment, Club Nacional de Football announces the death of our beloved footballer Juan Izquierdo. We send our deepest sympathies to his family, friends, coworkers, and loved ones. National mourns his terrible loss. RIP. The post stated, “Juan, you will be with us forever.”
The São Paulo soccer club released a statement following Izquierdo’s unexpected death, stating, “We had days of prayers, union, and hope, and today we are in deep sadness with the news of the death of Juan Izquierdo.” In this difficult time, we extend our condolences to the family, friends, teammates, Nacional supporters, and the whole Uruguayan people.
Izquierdo began his professional soccer career in 2018, and in 2023, he guided the Uruguayan league to its first title in more than a century.
