Rob Schneider and Adam Sandler’s tight relationship remains solid after all these years.
While supporting Sandler at the New York City premiere of his new Netflix comedy special Adam Sandler: Love You on Tuesday, Aug. 20, Schneider, 60, told PEOPLE how the Murder Mystery 2 actor, 57, has been a constant friend to him.
“There hasn’t been a week in 30 years that he hasn’t checked on me. I mean, that is true. Schneider adds, “No matter where I am in the world, I will get a phone call, sometimes in the middle of the night.” ” He contacted me from Italy and said, ‘What are you doing?’ I said, ‘It’s two a.m..” Well, get up. I need to talk to you. “Are you good?”
The couple, who met in the 1980s while training to be comedians, have been longstanding onscreen partners. They originally appeared together in 1998’s The Waterboy and have since appeared in over a dozen additional films.
Schneider commended Sandler for bringing him on board with so many of his major ventures.
“We have been friends for five decades. He’s a special kitty, and for him to include me in all of this is simply fantastic,” the Dead Wrong star tells PEOPLE. “I mean, I don’t have anything to say except that I love him and want him to be healthy, happy, and successful.” He’s simply wonderful.
He adds, “And he’s doing Happy Gilmore 2.” “How amazing is that?”
When asked if he will join his old colleague on the sequel to the 1996 golf comedy, Schneider teases, “We’ll see.”
Reflecting on Sandler’s flourishing career, Schneider expressed his admiration for his friend’s accomplishment, stating, “He’s only beginning.”
“It is lovely. His performance in Hustle was fantastic, as was Uncut Gems. He’s working with outstanding individuals,” adds Schneider, who recently made news for his strained relationship with his daughter, Elle King.
“He has a new film coming out with George Clooney for Netflix. “It’s been a wonderful, fantastic experience for him and a fantastic deal for Netflix to have the biggest movie star in the world on there,” he says, alluding to Sandler’s continued collaboration with the streaming company.
Sandler told PEOPLE at Thursday’s premiere that he is excited to do the long-awaited Happy Gilmore sequel.
“I’m more than excited, probably the most excited I’ve been in many years to shoot something,” he tells me. “We worked hard trying to write something that we thought people would have a good time with.”
On May 15, Netflix stated that Sandler is collaborating with the streaming service on the sequel. Months later, during an interview on The Tonight Show on August 20, the 50 First Dates actor revealed that Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce will be one of several sportsmen making cameo appearances in the upcoming film.
“We did not want to let anyone down.” People have been begging me for a long time, ‘Do Happy Gilmore 2,’ and I’ve always responded, ‘Nah, I’ll only disappoint you,'” Sandler stated at the time. “But then my friend Tim Herlihy and I came up with this concept, and we’re very enthusiastic about it. We wrote our butts off, and we’re still trying to make it a movie that you guys will enjoy, and I believe it’s—we’re excited. So many golfers are polite, and they’ll be a part of it all.”
