Despite a bear mauling him and a fellow hunter accidentally shooting him in an attempt to stop the attack, a 32-year-old man in Alaska has survived.
An Alaska State Troopers press release states that the man sustained injuries while hunting with a group near Cooper Landing on Saturday, August 17, at 3 p.m. local time.
According to officials, a brown bear attacked both the unnamed victim and a second hunter.
A press statement said, “Alaska Wildlife Troopers received a report that a bear attacked a hunting party on the Resurrection Pass Trail near Cooper Landing, and they needed help.” A brown bear attacked the two adult male hunters near Abernathy Cabin.
Both men opened fire on the bear during the attack, wounding the 32-year-old victim in the leg as a result, State Troopers Spokesman Tim DeSpain told the Associated Press in an email.
The troopers verified that one of the hunters involved in the attack killed the bear. It’s unknown which hunter caused the damage.
Authorities confirmed the immediate administration of “first aid”.
The wounded hunter received treatment for his wounds at a hospital in Anchorage.
An Alaska Rescue Coordination Center rescue crew rescued the second guy.
