In a heartwarming twist of fate, Campbell County Middle School principal, Jason Smith, extended his kindness and hospitality to a student in need, ultimately altering the course of her life.
The story unfolds with 11-year-old Raven Whitaker-Smith finding herself in Smith’s office following an incident during lunch. Raven’s regrettable action of throwing yogurt at a classmate led to the unfortunate consequence of a suspension. No one could have imagined that this event would start an amazing trip of kindness and help.
“I ended up in the principal’s office one day because of a little incident in the cafeteria,” Raven recalled. “I was taken aback when the principal posed an unexpected question during our conversation. He asked me to imagine a scenario where I was enjoying a meal with my family, and then asked if I would get in a silly food fight. It was an intriguing question that made me pause and reflect on the dynamics of such a situation. He told me he felt like a total jerk when I told him I didn’t have a family. I lived at Holly Hill as a foster child.” That conversation sparked a meaningful discussion between him and his wife, and the outcome of that exchange has become an unforgettable part of their story.
Smith felt bad about what was happening and went home to talk to his wife, Marybeth. With careful deliberation, the couple made the heartfelt decision to embrace Raven as a new member of their family, opening their home as foster parents.
“My parents underwent training and obtained certification to become foster parents through DCCH Center, all with the purpose of fostering me.” “They were unable to have children of their own, and something I said that day made them realize deep down that I was the missing piece their family had been longing for,” Raven shared. “According to my mom, there was always a lingering question in her mind about why she couldn’t have children. However, that all changed on the day she finally crossed paths with me.”
In June 2015, Raven moved in with the Smiths. The Smith family officially adopted Raven on November 3, 2017. Raven was a freshman in high school at the time.
Raven, a junior at the University of Kentucky, is pursuing her passion for social work.
“If someone had told my 11-year-old self that I would be a junior in college, I would have found it completely ridiculous. Being in foster care has had a profound impact on my life,” Raven reflected in an essay. “Growing up in the care of loving and supportive parents didn’t magically erase the pain I carried from my past. However, their presence created a nurturing environment that empowered me to confront my trauma, build self-confidence, and offer a glimmer of hope to a child who had lost all hope.”
“I truly believe that every child has the potential to be good,” expressed Jason Smith in an interview with GMA. It is widely acknowledged that children are greatly influenced by their surroundings and those who are responsible for their childhood. However, it is disheartening to acknowledge that some children may not receive the necessary guidance they deserve. Nevertheless, when provided with the appropriate opportunities and a nurturing environment filled with support, love, and affection, every child has the potential to thrive and achieve success.
