Jimmy Carter was carried to his late wife Rosalynn’s burial on Tuesday, dressed sharply and draped in a blanket. He stood at the front of the room to bid his 77-year-old wife goodnight. The 99-year-old, who is currently receiving hospice care, drove 2.5 hours from Plains, Georgia, to Atlanta to attend the ceremony.
His wife’s body was taken to the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum on Monday. President Joe Biden and First Lady Dr. Jill Biden were also in attendance. Every previous first lady was invited, including Laura Bush, Michelle Obama, Hillary Clinton, and Melania Trump.
They were all observed entering Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church in a line on Tuesday afternoon, having attended as well.
Chip Carter, the former president’s son, told The Washington Post that his father had visited Rosalynn in her final moments, telling her he loved her and was pleased of all the “wonderful things she had done” in her life.
She was well-known for her unwavering support for better mental health services and increasing public awareness of mental health issues. She fought heroically to reduce the stigma connected with mental illness.
