Wesley Plumber, a 36-year-old singer with an atypical appearance for an America’s Got Talent performer, pleasantly surprised the audience in a recent performance. Despite facing rejection from the judges after a misstep while singing ABBA’s “Take A Chance On Me,” Wesley’s apology was interrupted by an audience member who passionately pleaded for another opportunity for him.
To everyone’s astonishment, the seemingly spontaneous ‘audience member’ initiated a spirited song advocating for Wesley’s second chance. Soon, others in the audience, including the camera guy, joined in. The impromptu performance escalated when the group of singers and Wesley took the stage for a triumphant rendition of “Take A Chance On Me.” This escalated further as a large choir and the UCLA marching band with brass instruments joined in, creating a euphoric and feel-good moment that had the entire audience on their feet and clapping.
At the conclusion of the song, Wesley revealed that the entire surprise was orchestrated by the New York City performance art group Improv Everywhere, known for their previous viral projects. The judges, consisting of Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum, Sofía Vergara, and Howie Mandel, then had to decide the fate of the audition. While Klum praised the lighthearted and enjoyable nature of the performance and voted yes, Vergara, despite acknowledging the spectacular presentation, gave a no, stating that the surprise factor fell short for her.
Cowell passionately defended the act, expressing his genuine surprise and enjoyment of the performance, ultimately giving a yes. The audience overwhelmingly supported Cowell and Klum, applauding their positive votes. However, Howie Mandel took on the role of the villain in the story, dismissing the performance as suitable for a party gag but not for the show. Despite the audience’s boos and even disapproval from host Terry Crews, Howie delivered a firm no vote, solidifying his position as the dissenting judge.
